...There are many reasons, some emotional some rational, but all geared to help develop the game we all love. The first and by far the largest opportunity is the World Cup. The pinnacle of international competition, it offers all home nations the opportunity to compete on a world stage.
By separating into England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales each country can compete individually in the World Cup. This increase in regular international games will help strengthen each holistically as a playing nation and develop the game at club level. It will also improve each country's chances of generating support from government, broadcasters, sponsors, media and the wider population. Which in turn will help support the RFL and RLEF's strategy to grow the game in the Northern Hemisphere, vital to the very future of our sport.
On a more emotional level, every player should have the opportunity to represent their own country. The RFL began consulting with various sections of the sport in 2004, top players have confirmed their support for the England team and stars such as Iestyn Harris and Lee Briers have already showed loyalty to their native countries.
And finally, it will give England the chance to grow, win new fans and take on the worldÕs best on a level playing field.
